Slice of the Federal Government Pie

Here’s a useful pie chart from the Cato Institute’s new “Downsizing the Federal Government” Web site summarizing 2009 federal government spending into categories:

As can be seen, social welfare programs (Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid) make up a large bulk of spending — more so than spending on defense, despite the popular myth. Another important point to notice is how large a percentage the recent financial bailouts make up.
