I’ve had somewhat mixed emotions on Sarah Palin resigning as Alaska’s governor. One half of me is disappointed to see a politician who actually believes what she says stepping down. Another part of me hopes other politicians follow her example and, quite frankly, term-limit themselves.
We’d have a much more honest and limited government if politicians didn’t stick around so long. Politicians who seek to perpetually stay in political office are an unsavory bunch as they often exemplify the old adage that power corrupts. We would do well to start with a fresh batch of them every few years. That’s the type of change we could really believe in. I’m reminded of an anonymous quote I once read: “Politicians, like diapers, have to be changed frequently – and for the very same reason.”
